Dr Maria Petrocheilou is an Assistant Professor specialising in English–Greek Interpreting (Government Gazette, Issue 2453/19.05.2026) at the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting of Ionian University, Greece.

She is a graduate of the Department of French Language and Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1992) and holds a degree in Conference Interpreting from the School of Modern Languages for Interpreters and Translators at the University of Trieste (1998). She also holds two postgraduate degrees: an MA in Modern Greek Studies from Freie Universität Berlin (2003) and a Master of Advanced Studies in Interpreter Training from the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting at the University of Geneva (2007). On 31 May 2022, she successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in Interpreting Studies entitled “Proper Names and Numbers as Error Triggers in Simultaneous Interpreting With and Without Text” at Ionian University.

Her areas of expertise include conference interpreting and legal interpreting. She has been trained in court interpreting at the School of Translation and Interpretation (ETI) of the University of Geneva and has delivered presentations and conference papers on conference and court interpreting.

Dr Petrocheilou has worked as a professional translator since 1996 and as a conference interpreter since 1998, having lived and worked in Italy, Germany and Greece. She has by now accumulated more than 1,500 days of professional conference interpreting experience.

Her academic teaching experience includes appointments as a contract lecturer in conference interpreting at the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting of Ionian University (2005–2011) and as an Academic Fellow at the same institution (October 2022–January 2026). She has also taught translation and interpreting in private higher education institutions and professional training programmes.

Between 2016 and 2018, she successfully designed and delivered training for community interpreters under a programme organised by the humanitarian organisation SolidarityNow. The programme aimed to prepare interpreters to work in asylum procedures, public services and courts, with particular emphasis on interpreting in institutional and migration-related settings.

From 2018 to 2026, she taught conference interpreting and translation at postgraduate level through programmes offered by the University of Strasbourg's affiliated institution in Athens, the Scientific College of Greece.

Between 15 June 2023 and 30 April 2024, she was a member of an Ionian University research team commissioned by the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum to develop and operate a register of interpreters supporting migrant and refugee registration procedures and asylum processes.

Dr Petrocheilou is a member of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), a full member of the Hellenic Association of Conference Interpreters (SYDISE), a full member of the Italian Association of Professional Conference Interpreters (ASSOINTERPRETI), a certified professional translator and full member of the Panhellenic Association of Professional Translators (PEEMPIP), and a member of the Hellenic Society for Translation Studies.

She served as President of the Hellenic Association of Conference Interpreters (SYDISE) for three consecutive terms, from December 2015 to February 2022. During her presidency, the association's membership increased fourfold.
