In the course Simultaneous Interpreting Greek-English II, students are expected to consolidate and further develop the knowledge and skills acquired during the previous semester through intensive practical training in simultaneous interpreting. Particular emphasis is placed on further strengthening their existing interpreting competencies and on targeted improvement in areas in which they wish to specialise. Students are also given the opportunity to focus on subject areas and modes of interpreting that align with their individual interests and professional aspirations, with the aim of preparing them more effectively for entry into the professional interpreting market.

The course also includes training in sight translation from Greek into English of legal and judicial texts, as well as examination materials for speedboat operator licensing examinations, for which the presence of an interpreter is mandatory for foreign candidates.

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools is not permitted during class. However, students are encouraged to use these tools judiciously during their independent study.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

Week 1: Review and further development of the core techniques and strategies of simultaneous interpreting from Greek into English. Booth-based interpreting exercises using authentic political speeches. Assessment of students’ current proficiency levels and identification of their interpreting strengths and areas requiring further improvement.

Week 2: Booth-based simultaneous interpreting exercises using political speeches of increasing difficulty. Emphasis on managing the time lag between the source speech and the interpretation (décalage), reformulation, accuracy of delivery, and the production of natural, coherent spoken English.

Week 3: Simultaneous interpreting exercises using authentic speeches on political, economic, and geopolitical topics. Focus on managing speech delivery rates, information density, and cognitive load. Application of anticipation, compression, and restructuring strategies.

Week 4: Simultaneous interpreting exercises using speeches delivered by senior government officials and representatives of international organisations. Emphasis on subject-specific preparation, terminology research, and strategies for handling cultural references and complex syntactic structures. Performance assessment and individualised feedback.

Week 5: Booth-based simultaneous interpreting exercises using specialised speeches on political and economic topics. Focus on handling numerical data, proper names, abbreviations, and specialised terminology. Development of strategies for effective information management and maintaining coherence in the target-language output.

Week 6: Simultaneous interpreting exercises from Greek into English using authentic speeches. Introduction to sight translation of legal texts, with particular emphasis on powers of attorney and standard contractual formulations. Familiarisation with the specific features of legal terminology and differences between Greek and English-language legal discourse.

Week 7: Booth-based simultaneous interpreting exercises using challenging political and institutional speeches. Sight translation exercises involving legal texts, with particular emphasis on articles of association and the governing documents of other legal entities. Focus on terminological accuracy, syntactic restructuring, and the immediate oral rendering of complex legal formulations.

Week 8: Simultaneous interpreting exercises using speeches on economic, political, and geopolitical topics. Sight translation exercises involving notarial documents and contracts. Emphasis on understanding the structure of legal texts, recognising standard legal formulations, and handling specialised terminology.

Week 9: Simultaneous interpreting exercises using authentic speeches of increasing difficulty. Completion of the legal sight translation module through integrated exercises involving powers of attorney, articles of association, and contracts. Assessment of accuracy, fluency, and speed of delivery, followed by individualised feedback.

Week 10: Sight translation exercises from Greek into English focusing on preparation for examinations leading to a speedboat operator’s licence. Familiarisation with relevant nautical terminology, navigation rules, maritime safety measures, and examination procedures. Practice in the immediate, accurate, and comprehensible oral rendering of questions and answers drawn from official examination materials. Additional simultaneous interpreting practice using speeches on specialised topics.

Week 11: Preparation and simulation of a conference (mock conference), with students assigned the roles of speakers, interpreters, and participants. Simultaneous interpreting exercises from Greek into English under simulated professional conditions. Application of preparation strategies, teamwork in the interpreting booth, and effective management of interpreting performance.

Week 12: Mock conference featuring authentic or simulated speeches of increased difficulty. Simultaneous interpreting practice under time pressure, with particular emphasis on autonomy, accuracy, and fluency of delivery. Recording of students’ interpretations, self-assessment, peer assessment, and individualised feedback from the instructor.

Week 13: Systematic preparation for the end-of-semester examinations. Simulation of examination conditions through simultaneous interpreting exercises from Greek into English and sight translation of specialised texts. Performance assessment based on the examination criteria, review of key interpreting techniques and strategies, and individualised guidance for final examination preparation.

Face-to-face teaching through lectures, discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and brainstorming activities. The practical component of interpreting is taught through hands-on exercises, role-playing, group work, peer assessment, and self-assessment.

Use of ICT in teaching

In the end-of-semester examinations, students are required to simultaneously interpret a speech lasting 10–12 minutes and to sight-translate into English an excerpt from the examination materials for speedboat operator licensing, as well as a legal text.
