Intensive practical seminar which focuses on the theory and practice of simultaneous interpretation, with emphasis on issues of documentation and conference preparation.

Week 1: Introduction to the methodology of simultaneous interpreting. Key characteristics, cognitive demands, and stages of the interpreting process.

Week 2: Cognitive processes and strategies in simultaneous interpreting. Daniel Gile’s Effort Models, cognitive load management, and strategies for coping with interpreting difficulties.

Week 3: Conference interpreting preparation methodology. Assignment analysis, identification of information needs, and preparation planning.

Week 4: Subject-matter research and terminology preparation. Searching for, evaluating, and using information sources; terminology extraction and organisation; glossary compilation.

Week 5: Technological tools supporting preparation and simultaneous interpreting. Digital resources, terminology management tools, and artificial intelligence applications.

Weeks 6–12: Practical application of conference interpreting preparation methodology through simulations of realistic conference scenarios covering different subject areas. Students practise analysing conference interpreting assignments, identifying and evaluating information sources, conducting subject-matter and terminology research, compiling and organising glossaries, and using technological tools, with the aim of developing a comprehensive approach to preparing for interpreting assignments in different conference settings.

Week 13: Review and evaluation of methodological approaches. Presentation and discussion of conference preparation assignments.

Use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in teaching, assignment preparation, and assessment.

In the exams, students are required to submit a written paper that records the actions and research steps regarding the preparation for participation in an international conference. The assignment has the form of an essay.
