Greek Novel, short story, literary criticism since the 1960s. History and literature, European movements and influences, translation of Greek literature into foreign languages.
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:
- know aspects of Modern Greek Prose
- be aware of literary criticism
- recognize authors, literary genres, works etc.
- evaluate specific titles, topics etc.
Weeks 1 & 2: Introduction to the 1960s.
Weeks 2, 3 & 4: Rewriting History: Stratis Tsirkas, Dimitris Chatzis, Andreas Fragkias, Thanassis Valtinos.
Weeks 5 & 6: The Angry Youth of Greek Prose: Marios Chakkas, Antonis Samarakis, Renos Apostolidis, Vassilis Vassilikos, Menis Koumantareas, Spyros Plaskovitis.
Weeks 7 & 8: The “Low Voices”: Yorgos Ioannou, Kostas Tachtsis.
Weeks 9 & 10: Deviations from Realism.
Weeks 11 & 12: Prose during the Dictatorship (1967-74).
Week 13: Conclusions.
