Short Description:

The students get in contact with social practice of language behavior and with the dialectic relationship between society and power, ideologies as expressed and formed through and about Language. Moreover, there is an examination of the relationship between language, culture and social phenomena as they evolve within Turkey and special attention is given to the studying of phenomena through changes in written discourse.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Students are expected to:

  • acquire the ability of critical thinking about the cultural "image" of Turkey that they have acquired by the course "Turkey: Civilization and Culture". And this is done mainly through the presentation of the fundamental relationship between Language and Politics, Language and Power, Language and Political-Social Changes.
  • better understand the Turkish language and society through the presentation of the views, attitudes and perceptions that exist for different groups or people in relation to themselves as well as for other groups of people, objects, ideas, etc.
  • be able to interpret facts and information relating to social, scientific or ethical issues.
  • be introduced to the Theory of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA)
  • interpret images, videos and excerpts of Turkish political discourse, analyzing both the micro-level and the macro-level of texts, images, etc.

Teaching Methods:

Face to face/ The course is done in the form of lectures during which a dialectical discussion is developed not only about the information provided by the lecturer but also regarding the relative material presented to the students.

New Technologies:

The use of new technologies is focused on the presentation of powerpoints, videos and interviews related to the material taught.

Evaluation Methods:

The course is examined with written examination. As referred in the lectures, the students are expected to develop their critical ability of component type comment (always on the basis of the knowledge acquired in the lectures) of specific images or/and texts given to them.
