Short Description:

 In this course we focus on the history of the Albanian language,

the issue of oral and written forms in the dialects used in the country,

the Congress on the alphabet to be adopted, language reforms

and Western and Eastern influences and especially influences from neighboring nations,

the standardization of language to be used officially, relations between language

and national identity, minority languages as they exist in the national area of Albania.

We also consider the development of Albanian-speaking ethnic regions (Albania, Kosovo, FYROM).

We also look relations among the existing religions as well as issues pertaining to education alongside

certain key figures of Albanian literature. The political situation in Albanian-speaking countries and regions is also discussed throughout this course.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course the following targets will be accomplished:

 

  • Knowledge of the history of the Albanian national state
  • Contact with the history and the development of Albanian language
  • Acquaintance with the Albanian society in various phases of its history
  • Familiarization with the Albanian culture in various expressions
  • Approach of the mentality of the neighbouring Albanian population

 

Learning outcomeThe contact and familiarization of students with the culture, language and society of the neighboring Balkan state, which will help eliminate the social stereotypes for the image of the less populous peoples, as well as the intake of diversity with respect to others that leads to the approval of multicultural societies.

Week 1: The characteristics  of Ottoman domination in Albania

 

Week 2: Ethnicity and religious doctrines in space     

 

Week 3: Theories of Albanian origin and form of the Albanian language

 

Week 4: Albanian national movement, cultural and political activities for its unification

 

Week 5: Congresses  for a common alphabet

 

Week 6: Independence of Albania and  first attempts at governance

 

Week 7: w.w I and Albania

 

Week 8: Political instability period and Interwar         

 

Week 9: King Zog and Italian control of Albania

 

Week 10: Efforts to organize an education system and nationalize education

 

Week 11: Relationship between language and national identity

 

Week 12: World War II, Communist Party of Albania and the process of establishing a national language

 

Week 13: The end of Communist rule and the path to political pluralism

Teaching Methods:

Face to face: Use of audiovisual means and maps. Provision of copies

of scientific and journalistic articles as well as topics for student preparation

and mutual speculation for the next week class.

Evaluation Methods:

Oral examination or project presented before the rest of the students, there are comments and notes and then are graded.
