Short Description:

The course aims at specialization in the translation of scientific and technical texts from English to Greek. Specialized texts in Medicine, Biology, Pharmacology, Biogenetics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering and Environmental Sciences are addressed, with emphasis on scientific publications, research articles and technical manuals. Students delve into the theory of scientific translation, develop translation skills and terminology management, as well as become familiar with modern artificial intelligence (AI) tools and Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools to increase efficiency and improve the quality of translation work.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will have achieved the following learning objectives:

  • Specialized knowledge of the characteristics and requirements of scientific and technical translation
  • Advanced skills in terminology research and creation of specialized glossaries
  • Ability for etymological analysis and rendering of neologisms in scientific fields
  • Critical evaluation of translation choices and improvement proposals
  • Application of theoretical models to the practice of scientific translation
  • Use of modern AI tools to support the translation process
  • Collaborative skills for team translation projects
  • Research skills for documentation and verification of scientific terms

Teaching Methods:

Face to face/ Guided, collaborative translating in class (students first prepare translations at home), working with texts of increasing difficulty and length, and across several scientific genres. Study material and updates are further provided through the Department’s e-class platform.

Use of ICT in teaching

Evaluation Methods:

Weekly translation tasks and evaluation of the translation product in class. Students are asked to submit a semester assignment which consists in completing a specialized translation project.
