Short Description:

The course aims at –via a ‘laboratory formed’ approach based on the students’ interactive participation—their sensibilisation in the area of Literature and the gradual procedure of their familiarization with Literary translation. This is an undergraduate course which mostly aims at initiating, considering and practicing rather than teaching prepared ‘translation techniques' or application of theories. The students’ familiarization with the literary translation is accomplished via weekly practical activities based on both long non-translated extracts from French to Geek (and vice versa) and the elaboration process of translated books. During the last six years, the topical area in which the specific pedagogical approach is implemented, are the relationships between Greek and French literature in the forty-year period of 1960-2000.
The literary extracts present a gradually high degree of difficulty every semester depending on the choice of both the literary genre and the writer. During this stage, an emphasis is given on both the genre of novel and the essay writing. The common topic of these sessions constitutes a cycle which starts in October, i.e. at the beginning of the winter semester and continues even during the vernal semester including the same objectives, topical issues and methodological approach.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

The course is constructed as a ‘laboratory’ workshop, relies on the active participation of students, and aims at raising their awareness regarding the field of Literature and at acquainting them with the phenomenon of literary translation. It is a subject that focuses more on initiation, reflection and practice and less on teaching ready-made 'translation techniques' or applying theories. Students become acquainted with the phenomenon of literary translation gradually, through classroom exercises each week, which are based on long abstracts of texts translated from French to Greek, which are not translated yet. In addition, the students become aware of literary translation by critically processing already translated literary works. Example cases approached translationally in the semester are among others, the description of nature, the translation of names, titles of literary works, toponyms as well as the translation of certain textual/cultural elements regarding national and religious ceremonies. Essays are also translated so as to help students gain the translation skills needed. During the final part of the semester students will begin to acquire skills in translating certain kinds of literary texts from French into Greek (see' Course Content 'below) and they will be able to attend actively the courses of the following semesters.
