Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:

  • understand important parameters of the structure and the organization of a text before they start translating
  • recognize specific lexical, syntactical and pragmatical features of the French written discourse as well as how to translate them in Greek
  • recognize and comprehend idiomatic expressions of French as well as ways to translate them in Greek
  • translate without difficulty various text types of French
  • transfer a French text to Greek
Syllabus:

Short description : The course aims to the analysis of French original texts of medium difficulty first at sentence level and then at text level. The course focuses on elements that show particular translation difficulties at lexico-grammatical, morpho-syntactic and pragmatic level, as well as with regards to aspects of textuality.

Week 1:

Workshop: text analysis at sentence level, focusing on the phenomenon of word abbreviation. Study of increased frequency of acronyms and words resulting from apocope or aphaeresis and translation suggestions into Greek.

Week 2:

Workshop: phenomena of synonymy, homonymy, paronymy, parasynonymy, and false friends. Application on a medium-sized text to be analysed and translated.

Week 3:

Workshop: phenomena of the French grammar of particular translation interest, such as potential mood, imperfect tense, future tense and their use. Application on a medium-sized text to be analysed and translated.

Week 4:

Workshop: analysis of morho-syntactic structures of the French language used for emphasis, hypothesis or commenting. Application on small texts to be analysed and translated.

Week 5:

Workshop: production and formulation mechanisms of the French language, emphasising on the formulation and identification criteria of compound forms. Application on small texts to be analysed and translated.

Week 6:

Workshop: text types. Processing of the features of a specific text type and translation.

Week 7:

Workshop: analysis of the features of two texts that belong to different text types and translation.

Week 8:

Workshop: analysis of the features of three texts that belong to different text types and translation.

Week 9:

Workshop: presentation about the aspects of textuality, emphasising on cohesion and coherence. Application on a text to be analysed and translated.

Week 10:

Workshop: continuation of the presentation about the aspects of textuality, emphasising on intertextuality and situationality. Application on a text to be analysed and translated.

Week 11:

Workshop: continuation of the presentation about the aspects of textuality, emphasising on intentionality and acceptability. Application on a text to be analysed and translated.

Week 12:

Workshop: basic summarising techniques and application on a medium-sized text.

Week 13:

Workshop: course recap and application of the learning material on a text.

Teaching Methods:

DELIVERY: Face to face: The course is two-hour long, so that the students may come in direct contact with and gain experience by using the language. During the first hour, a lecture is delivered with the help of a PowerPoint presentation and internet material. During the second hour, the students are expected to process and comment on the exercise(s) handed out with the assistance of the instructor. The weekly assignment is considered an integral part of the learning process.

Evaluation Methods:

STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: The final assessment and grading of the course will be held through a written examination, during which the students are expected to apply the learning material provided throughout the course.
