Short Description:

The course aims to the analysis of French original texts of medium difficulty first at sentence level and then at text level. The course focuses on elements that show particular translation difficulties at lexico-grammatical, morpho-syntactic and pragmatic level, as well as with regards to aspects of textuality. The main theories used are the Text Linguistics of de Beaugrande & Dressler, Greimas's isotopy and B. Pottier's semantic analysis.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand important parameters of the structure and the organization of a text before they start translating
  • recognize specific lexical, syntactical and pragmatical features of the French written discourse as well as how to translate them in Greek
  • recognize and comprehend idiomatic expressions of French as well as ways to translate them in Greek
  • translate without difficulty various text types of French
  • summarize a French text into Greek.
Syllabus:

Week 1:

Familiarization with the course object.

Brief presentation of de Beaugrande & Dressler's text linguistics, Greimas' isotopy and Pottier's semantic analysis. Presentation of basic textual genres with examples from the Internet: article, product presentation text, specialized text, advertisement.

 

Week 2:

Workshop: phenomena of synonymy, homonymy, paronymy, parasynonymy, and false friends. Application on a medium-sized online text to be analysed and translated. The text may be about family, work or everyday life and is studied on the basis of Pottier's semantic analysis.

 

Week 3:

Workshop: phenomena of the French grammar of particular translation interest, such as potential mood, imperfect tense, future tense and their use. Application on a medium-sized text to be analysed and translated. The text may be about family, work or everyday life and is studied on the basis of de Beaugrande & Dressler's text linguistics with special emphasis on cohesion and coherence.

 

Week 4:

Workshop: analysis of morpho-syntactic structures of the French language used for emphasis, hypothesis or commenting. Application on small online texts to be analysed and translated. The texts may be about family, work or everyday life and are studied on the basis of de Beaugrande & Dressler's text linguistics with special emphasis on informativity and acceptability.

 

Week 5:

Workshop: derivation and word formation mechanisms of the French language, emphasising on the formation and recognition criteria of multi-word forms. Application on small online texts to be analysed and translated. The texts may be about family, work or everyday life and are studied on the basis of Pottier's semantic analysis.

 

Week 6:

Workshop: text analysis at sentence level, focusing on the phenomenon of word abbreviation. Study of increased frequency of acronyms and words resulting from apocope or aphaeresis and translation suggestions into Greek. Texts from organisations and other bodies are studied on the basis of de Beaugrande & Dressler's text linguistics with special emphasis on cohesion and coherence.

 

Week 7:

Workshop: continuation on the aspects of textuality (de Beaugrande & Dressler), emphasising on intentionality and acceptability. Application on an online text to be analysed and translated. The text may focus on family, work or everyday life matters.

 

Week 8:

Workshop: continuation on the aspects of textuality (de Beaugrande & Dressler), emphasising on intertextuality and situationality. Application on a text to be analysed and translated. The text may focus on family, work or everyday life matters.

 

Week 9:

Workshop: analysis of the features of two texts that belong to different text types and translation. A brief article and a product presentation text are studied on the basis of Greimas's isotopy.

 

Week 10:

Workshop: analysis of the features of three texts that belong to different text types and translation. A brief article, a product presentation text and an advertisement are studied on the basis of Greimas's isotopy.

 

Week 11:

Workshop: choosing and studying of online French advertisements in order to highlight their textuality features.

 

Week 12:

Workshop: basic summarising techniques and application on a medium-sized text.

 

Week 13:

Workshop: course recap and application of the learning material on a text.

Teaching Methods:

DELIVERY: Face to face: The course is two-hour long, so that the students may come in direct contact with and gain experience by using the language. During the first hour, a lecture is delivered with the help of a PowerPoint presentation and internet material. During the second hour, the students are expected to process and comment on the exercise(s) handed out with the assistance of the instructor. The weekly assignment is considered an integral part of the learning process.

Course material upload (notes, lecture slides, exercises, etc.) onto the Open eClass platform.

Evaluation Methods:

Compulsory written semester assignment: translating a text and highlighting its textual features (30%).

Written examination: text translation and highlighting of its textual characteristics during the examination period (70%).
