Short Description:

This course also aims to familiarize students with translation methodology through the translation practice on general texts. Students are given texts of an increased level of difficulty and varied topics to provide them with a brief introduction to the translation of more specialized texts so as to better prepare them for the texts they will be working with in the next semesters. Students are assigned texts to be prepared and presented in class where the various solutions to translation problems chosen by the students are discussed in depth and evaluated in order to arrive at a final translation in the target language.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

This course aims to further familiarize students with the practice of translation. Continuous improvement of students' skills in the Greek-English language pair. Approximation of elements that affect the production and reception of translations of general content. Introduction to translation practice.

 

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:

  • learn to research resources and aids online.
  • adapt the information they draw to the needs of their project.
  • learn to evaluate the reliability, relevance and usefulness of the resources with the goal of developing skills necessary in order to be able in the future to apply the knowledge and understanding acquired professionally in the market to solve problems within the translation process.
  • during the current semester, they learn to write on their own, in a simulation of market conditions, articles in English for publication in English-language newspapers.

Teaching Methods:

Face to face/ Guided, collaborative translating in class (students first prepare translations at home), working with texts of increasing difficulty and length, and across several genres of informative articles/texts. Students are called upon to find sources/aids and comparable corpora so as to widen their pragmatic knowledge base by genre and subject matter of each text to be translated, in order to more comprehensively understand the source text but also to familiarize themselves with foreign language texts of similar or corresponding subject matter. Study material and updates are further provided through the Department’s e-class platform.

Evaluation Methods:

In addition to weekly translation tasks, students are asked to submit a semester assignment, consisting of translation and a commentary focusing on problems encountered during the process, and further evaluating the aids used in the practice of translation.
