Short Description:

The course aims to further enhance students’ ability to translate general texts from English into Greek, building and extending on the course General Translation III. Through weekly translation tasks, students practice on texts of gradual challenge, across a variety of genres, with a focus on identifying the challenges and characteristics of particular text types. There is emphasis on genre analysis and the identification of the communicative purpose of the source text and the similarities or differences with the target text. The students expand their awareness of morphosyntactic, semantic, stylistic and pragmatic elements of the texts to be translated and they refine their abilities to deal with challenges and make appropriate decisions

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course students will be able to:

1) successfully translate short texts written for a general audience

2) assess and evaluate their translation decisions

3) reflect on the processes and results/effects of the translation act

4) identify and evaluate translation challenges that arise through the search of equivalence across all the levels of meaning

5) evaluate translation challenges and propose suitable solutions taking into account the purpose and audience of the target text

6) identify and establish translation priorities based on the brief and skopos of the source text and the target text

7) gain the required knowledge that will allow them to undertake translation projects as future professionals

Teaching Methods:

The course is delivered in a workshop format with in-class discussion of the students’ translations. Short translation tasks targeting difference genres provide opportunities for student engagement and discussion. There are also opportunities for teamwork in in-class translation activities.

Use of E-class for weekly assignment submission

Evaluation Methods:

Written assignment – Translation and Commentary (100% of total grade)
