This course highlights the diachronic route of theatre by referencing writers, countries, trends, movements and distinguishing the different theatre eras from Antiquity to the present day. The course uses as a manual the two-volume book of Paolo Bozizio’s “HISTORY OF THEATER”. This marks the history of theatrical culture in the West. Each chapter refers to the stages, theatrical representations and dramatic texts and is rich with iconographic material (drawings and photographs), thus responds to the current necessities by presenting historical data on scenography, theatrical architecture and theatrical costumes. The field -exclusively-including dramaturgy sets the theme of each country. The book is addressed to students, but also to the wider readership, as it is a good guide throughout the journey of theatre history. For this reason, the author aspires to fill the historical and dramatic gaps of various countries by its concise, up to date structure.

This course also introduces students to theatrical terminology by using the ‘DICTIONARY OF THEATER’ by Patrice Pavis as reference material and raises issues concerning theatrical translation by highlighting the peculiarity of the performance of each specific literary genre.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will:

• recognize the most important eras of the theatrical life from antiquity to the beginning of the twenty-first century
• become familiar with the work of important theatrical creators
• be able to recognize theatrical trends, schools, movements and eras and to note the differences between theatre in Greece and abroad (England, France, Germany etc.)
• be introduced to theatrical terminology
• comprehend issues of theatrical translation by highlighting the peculiarities of the performance of the particular literary genre through the difficult passage from the textual code to theater settings
