The course approaches the characteristics of written and spoken discourse as a single phenomenon with a focus on the translation process. The basic principles of Text Linguistics and Discourse Analysis are studied and emphasis is placed on the communicative dimension through the approach of both semantics and pragmatics and respectively cotext and context, as well as the similarities/differences between text and speech. The theory of De Beaugrande & Dressler is developed and the seven basic principles that govern the written and spoken text are examined. Particular emphasis is placed on Coherence v. Halliday & Hasan. The role and aspects of deixis in the relationship between language and context are studied. The particularities of multimodal texts are approached, while, in addition, the characteristics of journalistic, literary and scientific/technical texts are studied, as well as spontaneous and planned oral speech in the students' working languages.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

- understand the basic principles of theories focusing on text, discourse, and communication,
- recognize the role of co-text and context, as well as the synergy between them,
- distinguish between various text types based on their characteristics and the specific communicative situation,

In class / This two-hour course takes the form of a lecture with a dialectic method but also with the help of PowerPoint and online material. At regular intervals, the students are given an exercise to consolidate their theoretical knowledge with selected examples from their working languages. Consolidation practice is considered a key part of the learning method. For the same reason, the compulsory work assigned to students as part of their assessment combines theoretical knowledge, personal research and experience concerning the main features of the written and spoken discourse in their working languages.
Use of ICT in Teaching.
Supporting the learning process via the open e-class electronic platform.
Student assessment takes place throughout the semester, based on their participation in the teaching process and their engagement with the assigned exercises.
