Short Description:

In this course we approach specific translation models either by linguists (Jacobson, Genette, Derrida, Coseriu, Steiner) or by philosophers (Vico, Herder, von Humbolt, Heidegger, Wittgenstein, Gadamer).

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will :

  • Have studies specific translation models either by linguists (Jacobson, Genette, Derrida, Coseriu, Steiner) or by philosophers (Vico, Herder, von Humbolt, Heidegger, Wittgenstein, Gadamer).
  • Be able to critically approach translation by processing metalingustic texts, which act as the theoretical pillar of translation theory in Greece and abroad
  • Recognise fundamental concepts of translation (open-closed translation, the ideal speaker, “what is text”, the metalinguistic function of the language etc.)
  • Have gained the necessary theoretical background that every professional translator needs
  • Build up on their knowledge from the previous lesson of “ Translation Theory and Practice I”
