Short Description:

The course of "Literary Translation Greek ‒ German II" is the continuation of the winter semesters course and deals with stories/texts by modern Greek authors of increased difficulty both linguistically as well as conceptually. A more “laboratory” course which requires the active participation of all students in order to improve and acquire further their skills.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, the students more experienced in the practice of literary translation and with great awareness will be able to:
• perceive and analyse a literary text more easily
• classify a text based on the genre and subject matter in the respective literary era
• understand more the poetic discourse and delve deeply into it
• distinguish the linguistic peculiarities of the original and their associative meaning
• maintain the structure and the character of the text through the translation progress
• respect the author´s style and translate it more easily into the target language
• be creative and find the proper solutions to the linguistic problems that they face

Syllabus:

1st week: Short story: Characteristics of the genre. Οδηγέ, ε οδηγέ (Odige, e odige) written by S. Dimitriou - text presentation, conceptual approach, analysis of rhetorical patterns, identification of linguistic difficulties - Jargon/metaphorical speech

2nd week: Group collaboration in the translation process of the text. Discussion of problems and suggested solutions

3rd week: Δεν καιγόταν αλλά έκαιγε (Den kegontan alla ekege) written by K. Gkimosoulis- Text to edit and translate. Presentation and text analysis. Translation process

4th week: Ο Ανακριτής (O Anakritis) written by M. Michailidis- Text analysis- Group collaboration to edit and translate, discussing linguistic problems during the translation, suggesting solutions

5th week: Ο άνθρωπος πεθαίνει, μόλις σταματήσει η μνήμη (O Anthropos pethenei, molis stamatisi I mnimi) written by M. Stasinopoulou - Text Analysis - Collaborative translation process

6th week: Novel- Definition- History- Narrative techniques. Ο Αλύγιστος (O Aligistos) written by K. Kotzias, presentation of the author and his literary work- Historical framework- Translational approach of the first chapter

7th week: Continuation of the translation process with discussion of the problems during the process and finding solutions to them

8th week: Continuation of the translation of the first chapter

9th week: Chapter 4- Continuation of the translation process. Figures of speech and coping strategies when translating them into the target language - Sentence analysis

10th week: Continuation of the translation process of the 4th chapter

11th week: Second part of the Novel, chapter 5. Highlighting difficulties. Collaborative translation process. Discussion of the problems

12th week: Second part of the Novel, excerpts from the 6th chapter - Editing and translating during the lesson. Discussion of problems

13th week: Summary, questions and critique

The texts to be translated vary from semester to semester.

Teaching Methods:

Face-to-face and distance learning. The course has a practical “laboratory” and an interactive character. It is mainly based on the questions asked by the students, the discussion and their comments. The curriculum is uploaded on the e-class platform.
