Short Description:

The course "Literary Translation Greek ‒ German I" is based on the various theories of literary translation and the Literary Studies. The texts are similar to those of the Literary Translation German – Greek I" and have the same difficulty degree in terms of content, literary style and language of origin. During this creative process of translating literary texts, students are often confronted with complex language/linguistic formats and are called to translate them as thoroughly as possible into the target language without altering the content, the authors language and style and with respect to the readership. The course is mainly practical “laboratory” and based on the active participation of the students in the act of translation.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:

  • analyse a literary text
  • understand the poetic language and delve into it
  • distinguish the language peculiarities of the original text and their associative meaning
  • maintain the structure and character of the text during the translation process
  • respect the authors style and transfer it as best as possible into the target language
  • be creative and find appropriate solutions to the language problems that they face
Syllabus:

1st week: Introduction to literature, literature genres, short history of Greek literature- literary eras

2nd week: Introduction to the theory (theories) of literary translation, problems and concerns

3rd week: Greek folktale and its characteristics. Text to edit and translate- simple language

4th week: Text analysis- Edit of the translation, discussion of language problems found during the translation process, suggested solutions

5th week: New text, translation process, discussing problems/difficulties, implementation of translation strategies and finding solutions.

6th week: Literary fairy tale- differences/similarities with folk fairy tale, poetic language, children and youth literature. Text to edit and translate

7th week: References to the author and the characteristics of his writing. Text analysis, language peculiarities. Translation process, discussion of problems and implementation of coping strategies.

8th week: Excerpt of text to be edited and translated together during class. Text analysis, highlighting language problems and cultural elements. Translation process.

9th week: Completion of translation process. Figures of speech and coping strategies for potential problems that arise when translating them into the target language.

10th week: New text to edit in collaboration. Discussing and problem solving.

11th week: New text analysis and edit, translation. Discussing problems faced during translation process and suggested solutions.

12th week: New text to edit and translate in collaboration.

13th week: Summary and questions

The texts to be translated vary from semester to semester.

Teaching Methods:

Face-to-face and distance learning. The course is mostly practical “laboratory” and is based to the greatest extent on the questions asked by the students, on discussion and their comments. Questions which answers are most often found in the theory. The curriculum is uploaded on the Ionio Open e-Class platform.

Written exam during the examination period.
