Short Description:

This is a laboratory course in which students come in contact with basic concepts of Translation, and in particular of the translation process. At the same time, they begin to translate texts of a relatively small degree of translational difficulty.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

The specific objectives of the course are to develop skills in:
• recognition of the communication conditions governing the translation act
• capturing the meaning of the text to be translated through its systematic analysis

producing reliable translations taking into account the communication conditions governing the translation
• use of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries;
• use of simple documentation sources

Teaching Methods:

Through special exercises based on the cognitive approach of Translation, students learn to approach the text to be translated as a whole, as a message, which they have to translate into another language without losing information

 

New Technologies:

From the first lesson students are trained in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) useful for the production of translations and electronic communication. Special emphasis is given to the utilization of applications for the production and sharing of documents, video communication, organization and planning of works, etc.

Evaluation Methods:

At the end of the semester, students are assessed as follows:

1st exercise: They answer questions about french-speaking reality and questions on issues that have been presented to the classroom during the semester (20% of the final grade)

2nd exercise: They have to translate a text of 200-250 words of medium degree difficulty (usually is given a text on the current news). The purpose of this test is to control the degree of assimilation by the students of the methods presented in the course during the semester (80% of the final grade). In this exercise, bilingual and monolingual dictionaries, as well as other tools such as grammar, verbatim textbooks, etc. are permitted.
