This module focuses on the analysis and translation of legal texts from Greek into German based on the Skopos Theory of Translation and the familiarization of students with the legal and judicial system of Greece. Students will be requested to analyse the macro-objective and micro-objective structure of legal and judicial texts, to translate them into German and to analyse and critique legal texts that are already translated into German. Finally, students will create their own glossary of legal and judicial terms.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:

• understand the complexity, composition and structure of the Greek Constitution and Civil Law
• distinguish special features of legal terminology and stylistics
• recognize the differences and similarities between the judicial and legal systems of Greece and Germany
• recognize the similarities and differences in the stylistics and structure of laws, bills, legislative acts, contracts and conventions
• develop critical thinking on issues pertaining to translation options depending on the type of legal text
• translate with the help of translation tools while respecting the intercultural elements and the peculiarities of the textual genre
• address the challenges of legal and judicial translation by appropriate theory application
• form a glossary of terms through specialized technological programs

Face to face. Along with the lectures, students will be asked to apply in real time, the theory and techniques that have been taught. In cooperation with the professor, students will discuss all their translation options and the process they have chosen during the translation act.

Use of ICT in teaching

Written examination at the end of the semester. The students are asked to translate into Greek an English text of about 400 words following specific translating instructions.
