Short Description:

This course (part I) examines a) issues on 19th-century Greek language and b) language errors through examples. The discussion of the Language Question and other contemporary aspects of Modern Greek are examined through critical essays. Language errors and theory are discussed through examples.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Theoretical discussion of recent and contemporary bibliography on Modern Greek. Basic historical aspects of 19th-century Greek language including the Language Question, definition of Standard Modern Greek. Language errors are discussed through oral and written discourse.

Syllabus:

Week 1: Modern Greek. Introduction.

 

Week 2: Greek language during the War of Independence. Language difficulties and errors.

 

Week 3: Greek language during the War of Independence II. Language difficulties and errors.

 

Week 4: Greek language during the War of Independence III. Language difficulties and errors.

 

Week 5: Greek literature after the 1830s. Language difficulties and errors.

 

Week 6: Greek literature after the 1830s II. Language difficulties and errors.

 

Week 7: Greek literature after the 1830s III. Language difficulties and errors.

 

Week 8: Greek literature after the 1830s IV. Language difficulties and errors.

 

Week 9: The Language Question. Language difficulties and errors.

 

Week 10: The Language Question II. Language difficulties and errors.

 

Week 11: The Language Question III. Language difficulties and errors.

 

Week 12: The Language Question IV. Language difficulties and errors.

 

Week 13: Conclusions. Revision.
