The Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting (DFLTI) of the Ionian University, recognizing Rita Kolaiti as a distinguished translator of works of world literature and European institutional texts, with a long and substantial presence in the field of Translation, awarded her the title of Honorary Doctor on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, and honored her for the entirety of her exceptional translation work.

The award ceremony took place in the Ceremonial Hall of the Ionian Academy. The reading of the Department’s resolution by the President of the Department, Professor Maria Tsigou, was followed by a laudatory address in honor of the awardee by the Vice President of the Department, Associate Professor Vilelmini Sossóni.

After the reading of the doctoral title by the Rector of Ionian University, Professor Andreas Floros, the investiture of the honoree with the academic gown took place, along with the presentation of the insignia of the Ionian University, the official resolution, and the doctoral diploma by the Rector and the President of the Department.

In her response speech titled “The Passion of Literature, the Passion of Translation,” Ms. Kolaiti spoke about the value, challenges, and the multidimensional undertaking of translating literary works.

The event concluded with a concert by students of the Department of Music Studies: a guitar recital by Mr. Giannis Bagios with three pieces from Federico Moreno Torroba’s Suite Castellana (Fandanguillo, Arada, and Danza), and performances of Romanze by Felix Mendelssohn, When I Have Sung by Ernest Charles, and Summertime by George Gershwin by soprano Eva Kargiofylli, accompanied on piano by Timotheos Tsigourov.
