The course delivers a picture of community interpreting in all its aspects, the role of the Community interpreter, her/his responsibility, principles, and practices. A third of the course is dedicated to theoretical issues and two-thirds are dedicated to practical workshop simulation exercises.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Students will get in touch with the basic principles of community interpreting. After successful completion of the course students will be able to :

- Be familiar with environments where Community Interpreting is being carried out

- Assess the social and cultural aspect of this type of translation

- Distinguish the techniques and requirements from other forms of translation

- Display profound knowledge of the ethical challenges

- Be aware of the challenges of community interpreting

- Display knowledge of public services

- Distinguish the dimension of volunteering in the fields of the community

Syllabus:

In detail, the course is divided into the following modules:

 

  • Basic introduction to interpreting / differences with translation.
  • Models of community interpreting.
  • Legal framework of interpreting in public services in Greece.
  • Types of Community interpretation related to the communication framework.
  • Psychological and social factors of Community interpreting.
  • Simulation of community interpreting in asylum settings.
  • Simulation of community interpreting in police settings.
  • Simulation of community interpreting in justice settings.
  • Simulation of community interpreting in health services (patient reception).
  • Simulation of community interpreting in health services (interpreting during surgery, delivery, etc.).
  • Simulation of community interpreting in education.
  • Simulation of community interpreting in refugee reception centers.
