The course delivers a picture of community interpreting in all its aspects, the role of the Community interpreter, her/his responsibility, principles, and practices. A third of the course is dedicated to theoretical issues and two-thirds are dedicated to practical workshop simulation exercises.
Students will get in touch with the basic principles of community interpreting. After successful completion of the course students will be able to :
- Be familiar with environments where Community Interpreting is being carried out
- Assess the social and cultural aspect of this type of translation
- Distinguish the techniques and requirements from other forms of translation
- Display profound knowledge of the ethical challenges
- Be aware of the challenges of community interpreting
- Display knowledge of public services
- Distinguish the dimension of volunteering in the fields of the community
In detail, the course is divided into the following modules:
- Basic introduction to interpreting / differences with translation.
- Models of community interpreting.
- Legal framework of interpreting in public services in Greece.
- Types of Community interpretation related to the communication framework.
- Psychological and social factors of Community interpreting.
- Simulation of community interpreting in asylum settings.
- Simulation of community interpreting in police settings.
- Simulation of community interpreting in justice settings.
- Simulation of community interpreting in health services (patient reception).
- Simulation of community interpreting in health services (interpreting during surgery, delivery, etc.).
- Simulation of community interpreting in education.
- Simulation of community interpreting in refugee reception centers.
