Teaching Staff: Kozobolis Stavros
Course Code: YE-0601
Course Type: Compulsory Elective
Course Level: Undergraduate
Course Language: Greek
Semester: Any Winter
ECTS: 2

The course introduces students to the fundamental principles, methods, and applications of Corpus Linguistics (CL). Particular emphasis is placed on the use of electronic corpora in both translation and research.
The course begins by presenting the basic concepts of CL, such as corpus, representativeness, balance, and annotation. It also examines the main types of corpora, the principal methodological tools used in corpus linguistics, and the fundamental methods of corpus analysis.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
-
demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental concepts of Corpus Linguistics (CL);
-
distinguish between different types of corpora and understand their characteristics;
-
understand the basic principles of corpus design and compilation;
-
conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses of a corpus;
-
understand the potential and limitations of corpora as tools for translation and interpreting;
-
write and present a research paper using corpora.

Face-to-face. The course consists of two-hour sessions delivered in the form of lectures, supported by presentations and online resources.
The course includes extensive demonstrations and hands-on use of corpus processing tools (e.g. AntConc and Sketch Engine). Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are not used extensively.
Students are assessed throughout the semester based on their participation in class activities and their engagement with practical exercises.
The final assessment is based on a written research paper involving the compilation and analysis of a corpus (80%) and a mandatory oral presentation of the paper (20%) during the final three weeks of the semester, in the form of a simulated academic conference.
