Short Description:

The objective of this course is to gradually familiarize students with translating scientific texts. We work with texts on Medicine, Biology, Pharmacology, Genetics, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental issues as well as EU texts in general as these texts use a particular style and language. The level of difficulty depends on the subject matter of source texts. We start with texts introducing students to the methodology of terminology and the subject matter of each field. During the following semesters we examine more difficult and specialized scientific texts. We compile small glossaries by extracting terminology from the translated/revised/documented texts. Machine translation tools are utilized during the translation process to familiarize students with diverse working environments. The use of artificial intelligence is not involved at any stage of the translation task.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Familiarizing students with the translation of specialized texts and the process of compiling a glossary through identifying domain-specific terms, determining their equivalents using a variety of available resources, providing sound justification for each chosen equivalent, and addressing the absence of terminology in the target language. Specifically, students will have the opportunity to gain initial experience in handling scientific texts of a significant level of difficulty. This will involve identifying field-specific terminology, searching for term equivalents in a variety of appropriate sources, evaluating both the sources and the proposed equivalents, justifying the choice of a specific term, and learning how to address cases where no equivalent term is readily available. Throughout the semester, students are required to work in groups in order to develop their skills in handling and evaluating sources and reference materials; a concurrent objective is to cultivate the ability to use available resources appropriately through collaborative effort and the exchange of productive ideas.

Teaching Methods:

Face to face/ Guided, collaborative translating in class (students first prepare translations at home), working with texts of increasing difficulty and length, and across several scientific genres. Study material and updates are further provided through the Department’s e-class platform.

The course takes the form of a lecture-workshop. It relies heavily on dialogue with the students, as well as their active participation and feedback. Key concepts are discussed, and practical exercises in translating various specialized texts are carried out, with reference to relevant theory. At the same time, students further develop their skills in researching sources, utilizing specialized reference tools and compiling a short glossary.

New Technologies:

Use of ICT in teaching.

Evaluation Methods:

Students are asked to submit a semester assignment which consists in completing a specialized translation project.
