Short Description:

Issues concerning the conceptualization of the term ‘’Balkans’’ and its derivatives, the theories of nationalistic ideology in general, the emerging nationalisms of the 19th century as well as the formation of the first nation states in the Balkan peninsula, are examined. Also attention is paid to the history and its ideological interpretations that led to the appearance of some new national formations during the 20th century after the collapse of the ‘’eastern bloc’’.

  

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

- Upon completion of the course the following aims will be accomplished:

-Knowledge of theories of nationalism in general

-Contact with the Balkan history

-Acquaintance with the first-nationalisms and the nationalistic ideologies that appeared in the area of the Balkan peninsula during the 19th and 20th century

-Approach to the mentality of the populations of neighbouring nation states

-  The contact and familiarity of the students with the civilization, language and societies of the neighbouring  Balkan states, will contribute to the elimination of social stereotypes about the image of the least featured people as well as the perception of diversity through a prism of respect for others that leads to the acceptance of multicultural societies.

Week 3 : Conceptualization and emergence of the term ‘’Balkans’’

 

Week 4:   Ethnicity and religious doctrines in space

 

Week 5:  National movements, cultural and political activities for its unification

 

Week 6: The case of Greece

 

Week 7: The case of Serbia

 

Week 8: The kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia )

 

Week 9: The case of Bulgaria

 

Week 10: The case of Romania

 

Week 11: The case of Albania

 

Week 12: The case of Turkey

 

Week 13: The emergence of nationalisms during the post-communistic period (20th century)
