Short Description:

The aim of the course is to examine further the theory and praxis of simultaneous interpreting. Since students have become familiar with the simultaneous interpreting process in the previous semester, lessons obtain weekly specific focus topics (of political, technological, scientific interest). Students prepare themselves for the conference topic of each lesson, as if they were going to work as interpreters at a real conference. The speeches become longer, more complicate and difficult, so as for the students to practice their skills in simultaneous interpreting, sight translation and chuchotage and learn how to manage their stress and improve their objectivity, adaptability and reflexes. In addition, they learn how to apply ethical principal and conduct rules in practice. Teaching is organized according to original material and speeches concerning Greek, European and international current affairs.

 

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able:
● to seek information on current issues of political, economic, geopolitical, cultural, etc. nature
● to analyze and reformulate texts and information
● to know and apply in practice the techniques and skills of simultaneous interpreting
● to present themselves and speak in front of an audience
● to research and prepare themselves for an interpreting task
● to apply ethical principles and conduct rules

Week 1: Introduction to the code of ethics and professional practice for conference interpreters.
Week 2: Showing professionalism in practice/Ethical dilemmas and examples.
Week 3: Simultaneous interpreting exercises in the booth with the use of specialized texts.
Week 4: Simultaneous interpreting exercises in the booth with the use of specialized texts.
Week 5: Simultaneous interpreting exercises in the booth with the use of specialized texts.
Week 6: Simultaneous interpreting exercises in the booth with the use of specialized texts.

Teaching Methods:

Face to face/ Discussion, questions and answers, brainstorming. Workshops, role playing, working groups, criticism and self-criticism.

New Technologies:

Use of digital educational material / "speech tanks" for practicing interpreting.

Evaluation Methods:

Students are asked to interpret simultaneously an 8-10 minutes speech.
