The aim of this laboratory course is to familiarise students with the translation of general texts, with particular emphasis on aspects that pose translation challenges. Students are introduced to basic concepts in Translation Studies, particularly those relating to the translation process, and are also initiated into the practice of translating texts of low to medium translation difficulty.

The overall aim of the course encompasses the following specific objectives:

• Introduction to the study of linguistic codes from a contrastive perspective
• Familiarisation with the variety of general text typology and the textual conventions of each language.
• Familiarisation with different registers.
• Familiarisation with a wide range of communicative situations.
• Awareness of cultural asymmetries between languages.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to produce an adequate translation and, more specifically, to:

• Identify the key features of general texts.
• Understand a text from linguistic, pragmatic and cultural perspectives.
• Understand the basic principles of Translation Studies and take them into account during the translation process.
• Identify and compare corresponding linguistic structures in the source and target languages.
• Recognise the multidimensional nature of translation as a phenomenon and appreciate the complexity of the translation process.
• Identify the cultural specificities of the source and target languages.
• Consult printed and electronic language resources.
• Justify their translation choices.
• Analyse their own errors.
