Short Description:

In this lesson, we emphasize the translation process. Through special exercises, based on the cognitive approach of Translation, students realize that "we do not translate words but texts". Translating should act as a stand-alone text, covering functions similar to those in the text source or those looking for specific categories of readers.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

The specific objectives of the course are to cultivate skills in:

• recognition of the communication conditions governing the translation

Teaching Methods:

This course emphasizes the approach and understanding of the text to be translated. Through special exercises based on the cognitive approach of Translation, students learn to approach the translated text as a whole, as a message, which they have to translate into another language without losing any information.

New Technologies:

From the first lesson students are trained in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) useful for the production of translations and electronic communication. Special emphasis is given to the utilization of applications for the production and sharing of documents, video communication, organization and planning of works, etc.

Evaluation Methods:

At the end of the semester, students are assessed as follows:

  • They are asked to translate a text of medium translation difficulty from 200 to 250 words (usually given text related to current news). The purpose of this test is to control the degree of assimilation by the students of the methods presented in the course during the semester (80% of the final grade).

  • They are asked to respond briefly to clarifying questions related to the text to be translated (20% of the final grade).

The bilingual and monolingual dictionaries, as well as other tools such as grammar, verbatim textbooks, etc., are allowed to be used.
