Short Description:

The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the theory and praxis of interpreting. In particular, the content of the course consists in the theoretical overview of the general principles of interpreting, its interdisciplinary approaches, its various types and their respective requirements. In addition, students become familiar with the basic skills of consecutive interpreting and learn how to apply them in practice. In particular, they learn to work with their memory, are introduced to the note-taking technique, practice public speaking and learn how to use information sources, analyze texts, manage terminology and prepare glossaries. Teaching is organized according to original material and authentic speeches, concerning current issues for which students prepare themselves in advance on a weekly basis.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able:
● to recognize the basic types and categorizations of interpreting
● to seek information on current issues of political, economic, geopolitical, cultural, etc. nature
● to analyze and reformulate texts and information
● to know and apply in practice the techniques and skills of consecutive interpreting
● to present themselves and speak in front of an audience
● to research and prepare themselves for an interpreting task

Syllabus:

Week 1: The categorizations of interpreting. Introduction to public speaking.
Week 2: The professional interpreter's profile. Listening exercises and analysis of general texts.
Week 3: Memory, comprehension, processing and rewriting exercises.
Week 4: Memory, comprehension, processing and rewriting exercises. Preparation and presentation of speeches in front of an audience.
Week 5: Memory exercises (ibid.). How do professional interpreters prepare themselves for an interpreting session?
Week 6: Memory exercises (ibid.). Introduction to the note-taking technique.
Week 7: Note-taking exercises with the use of general texts.
Week 8: Note-taking exercises with the use of general texts.
Week 9: Note-taking exercises with the use of specialized texts on current political, cultural, etc. affairs.
Week 10: Note-taking exercises with the use of specialized texts on current political, cultural, etc. affairs.
Week 11: Note-taking exercises with the use of specialized texts on current political, cultural, etc. affairs.

Teaching Methods:

Use of digital educational material / "speech tanks" for practicing interpreting.

 
Evaluation Methods:

Students are asked to interpret a 5-7 minute speech.
