The Chinese School of Classical Studies at Athens (CSCSA) is pleased to invite applications for the CSCSA Scholar Fellowship Program (CSFP). The program seeks distinguished senior scholars and outstanding early-career researchers working in Classical Studies, archaeology, or related fields. Research areas are not limited to ancient Greece, Rome, or China. Fellows are encouraged to undertake cross-cultural and comparative research on ancient world civilizations with one collaborative partner.
Fellowships are offered for a period of three to twelve months. The starting date of the fellowship is subject to mutual agreement between the selected scholar and CSCSA.
CSCSA provides a monthly allowance of €3,000 for senior scholars and €2,000 for early-career scholars. In addition, round-trip airfare to Athens will be reimbursed based on actual costs. Fellows are provided with dedicated office space, full access to the CSCSA library, and technical research infrastructure, as well as access to archaeological resources, including opportunities for excavation and the study of archaeological materials. Each Fellow may nominate one collaborative researcher, who may receive the same funding support for a maximum period of three months.
I. Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD and demonstrate a rigorous record of research excellence. Senior scholars are expected to be experienced researchers with significant academic contributions, while early-career scholars should be within five years of completing their PhD. High-level proficiency in either English or Chinese is required to support academic collaboration and public lecturing during the fellowship period.
II. Obligations
Fellows are expected to: (1) complete the approved research project during the fellowship period. Fellows are encouraged to submit research results to peer-reviewed journals, with appropriate acknowledgement of CSFP support; (2) deliver one public lecture; (3) submit a written final report; and (4) actively participate in academic activities organized by CSCSA.
III. How to Apply
Applications are reviewed on a semi-annual basis. The application deadline for this year is 30th September, 2026. Applicants should submit: (1) a current curriculum vitae; (2) a research statement covering the fellowship period; (3) one writing sample, such as a dissertation chapter or research paper; and (4) two letters of recommendation.
All application materials should be combined into a single PDF and sent by email to cn@cscsa.cn. Letters of recommendation should be sent directly by referees.
