The objective of this course is to gradually familiarize students with translating scientific texts. We work with texts on Medicine, Biology, Pharmacology, Biogenetics, Chemistry, Engineering and environmental issues. During this semester, the focus shifts to more specialized scientific texts, including academic publications and articles. Students are required to compile a short glossary—an essential prerequisite for the accurate translation of specialized texts—while also delving deeper into the theoretical underpinnings of translating technical and scientific material. This involves conducting research and subsequently commenting on the applicability of relevant theoretical approaches to the translation process and methodology. Machine translation tools are utilized during the translation process to familiarize students with diverse working environments. The use of artificial intelligence is not involved at any stage of the translation task.
Upon completion of the course, students:
- will have further developed their skills in translating specialized texts from Greek into English
- will be able to readily identify the structure and register of various types of academic and scientific texts, and will be capable of translating them accurately and precisely into the target language
- will have gained further familiarity with source research, the use of specialized reference tools, and the compilation of short glossaries, and will understand key concepts and terms within the fields under study in the Greek-English language pair
- will be able to identify, analyze, and describe the difficulties that arise when translating specialized texts from Greek into English and to address them appropriately by selecting from the various strategies at their disposal
- will have further developed their ability to evaluate the rendering of new and/or previously untranslated terms and will be able to propose improvements or corrections in cases where the renderings are incorrect or inadequate
- will have established the ability to handle and evaluate sources and aids, ensuring their correct, efficient, and time-effective use in future professional environments
- will be familiar with professional practice, as well as with the resources and tools available online
- will have acquired the necessary skills and tools to produce translations of specialized texts, working as professional translators.

The course takes the form of a lecture-workshop. It relies heavily on dialogue with the students, as well as their active participation and feedback. Key concepts are discussed and practical exercises in translating various specialized texts are carried out with reference to relevant theory. At the same time, students further develop their skills in researching sources, using specialized reference tools and compiling a short glossary. Study material and updates are further provided through the Department’s e-class platform.
Use of ICT in teaching.
Students are asked to submit a semester assignment which consists in completing a specialized translation project.
