The Ionian University (IU) was founded in 1984, and consists of five faculties and twelve departments. Its headquarters are in Corfu, with university units in Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zante. Since its foundation, it has developed rapidly, staffed with young scientists and capable instructors, provided effective solutions to the problem of building infrastructure, and undertaken important initiatives in the field of culture. Seven of the Departments of the IU, including the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting, are located in Corfu, a city with a rich historical, urban and architectural past, whose population amounts to 40,000 inhabitants.

The Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting is the only university-level department in Greece that trains Greek-speaking translators and interpreters. The Undergraduate Program of the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting is organized into two study cycles, each of which lasts 4 semesters and aims to train Greek-speaking translators or interpreters. The Department also offers second-cycle studies (MSc in Translation Science & MSc in Politics, Language and Intercultural Communication) and third-cycle studies.

The organization and operation of the Postgraduate Program (MA) “Security and Cultural Heritage Studies” is based on the legal framework for the structure and operation of universities, as in force, and in particular on Law 4957/2022, which regulates, among other things, issues related to postgraduate studies.

Following the relevant international postgraduate standards, the MA “Security and Cultural Heritage Studies” aims to provide students with specialized knowledge on the protection and threats to cultural heritage as well as a comprehensive understanding of contemporary security issues related to cultural heritage. Overall, the program is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to understand, analyze and address the complex challenges that threaten cultural heritage, including natural disasters, war and conflict, looting, illegal trade and “development” projects. Foreign graduates of Departments of the country and of the recognized equivalent institutions abroad have the right to participate in the admission procedures at the MA.
