The Laboratory for Specialised Translation and Language Technologies (STRALAT) serves the research and educational needs in the fields of Specialised Translation, including Multimedia and Audiovisual Translation, Terminology, Accessibility, and Translation Technology.

Research fields

STRALAT focuses on the following areas:

  • The generation of new knowledge in the fields of:
    • Translation of specialised and audiovisual texts
    • Translation pedagogy for specialised and audiovisual texts, including the development of model teaching programmes
    • Terminology
  • The utilisation of modern technologies and translation tools to support the work of translators of specialised and audiovisual texts, as well as to enhance accessibility (e.g., subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing, audio description for visually impaired individuals).
  • Collaboration with research centres, academic institutions in Greece and abroad, and other recognised organisations in relevant fields of expertise.
  • Production of reference translations, multilingual specialised dictionaries, audiovisual materials, and accessibility tools, in cooperation with other specialised bodies.
  • Organisation of undergraduate and postgraduate seminars, symposia, workshops, lectures, and simulation exercises, with particular emphasis on audiovisual translation, accessibility, and translation technology.
  • Protection of the Greek language and promotion of Greek culture abroad, with a special focus on Greek scientific thought and its outputs through translation.

Director of the Laboratory

The Director of the Laboratory is Associate Professor Vilelmini Sosoni.
